On 5th September 2021, the music world will celebrate the 230th birthday of the great European Giacomo Meyerbeer. The friends of the composer would like to mark this anniversary with the festive founding of the German Giacomo Meyerbeer Society and a double CD box with, among other things, 21 world premiere recordings of his works,
documenting the work of Meyerbeer researchers from England, the USA, Germany and Israel.

With the founding matinee of the world's first Giacomo Meyerbeer Society on September 5th, 2021, at 11 a.m. at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Germany, the extensive recognition of this outstanding German-Jewish composer, which has been outstanding for decades, is now finally being made public. Because in the public consciousness Giacomo Meyerbeer - well networked with the most important composers and intellectuals of his time - has so far almost only been remembered as the composer of his Grand Opéras. The fact that Meyerbeer also composed religious songs is almost unknown to this day and is only now being rediscovered. In the synagogues of the world, however, Giacomo Meyerbeer was an integral part of the worship service. In addition, during Meyerbeer's lifetime, his family also played a benchmark role in the context of the musical salon culture of historic Berlin, comparable to that of the Mendelssohn Bartholdy family and was also an important cultural bearer and patron of the German-Jewish history of science and culture. To this day, Meyerbeer's reputation still suffers from anti-Jewish resentments, which a Richard Wagner promoted, and which were carried on by the National Socialists. Fortunately, for some time now, large opera houses have slowly been opening up to Meyerbeer's music again and are including his works in their repertoire, including the Deutsche Oper Berlin with its legendary Meyerbeer cycle from 2014. The Giacomo Meyerbeer Society sees itself as a promoter of an appropriate reception of Meyerbeer that extends far beyond Berlin's borders, and his works, which include more than 15 completed operas in German, Italian and French.

The patron of the society is the general manager of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Mr Dietmar Schwarz.

Renowned journalist Julia Spinola will hold a ceremonial lecture on September 5th on "Between adoration and ‘Risches’, Giacomo Meyerbeer: A universalist artist with Jewish self-confidence".
