New operatic material for a new age - that was not just what the avant-gardists were looking for in the 1920s. Old master Richard Strauss went even further and not only brought a story from the modern world to the stage, but also, barely veiled, his own married life ... Conductor: Sir Donald Runnicles / Dominic Limburg; Production: Tobias Kratzer; With Philipp Jekal, Maria Bengtsson / Flurina Stucki [June], Thomas Blondelle and others.

Der Ring des Nibelungen
A group of people meet a grand piano on an empty stage, a note is struck, and slowly a world of fantasy, longing and intoxication unfolds, captivating everyone and fusing them into a community. This is how DAS RHEINGOLD, directed by Stefan Herheim, begins, true to Wagner's core idea of creating a modern equivalent to the community-building power of Greek theatre. On the four evenings, Herheim creates an arc that leads through stations in the performance history and finally into the foyer of the Deutsche Oper with its cloud sculpture. 11, 21, 28 May 2024
Das Rheingold
A group of people meet a concert grand piano on an empty stage, a note is struck, and slowly a world of fantasy, longing and intoxication unfolds, captivating everyone and causing them to merge into a community. This is how DAS RHEINGOLD begins, directed by Stefan Herheim ... Conductor: Nicholas Carter [11 May] / Sir Donald Runnicles; Director: Stefan Herheim; With Iain Paterson, Thomas Lehman, Thomas Blondelle, Jordan Shanahan, Ya-Chung Huang, Albert Pesendorfer, Tobias Kehrer, Annika Schlicht, Flurina Stucki u. a. 12, 22, 29 May 2024
Die Walküre
After the reign of the gods has reached its radiant zenith at the end of the RHEINGOLD with the entry into Valhalla Castle, the signs in the WALKÜRE are stormy: the people are frozen in greed for power, mistrust and possessiveness, the gods confine themselves only to monitoring compliance with the old laws instead of questioning their meaning ... Conductor: Nicholas Carter [12 May] / Sir Donald Runnicles; Director: Stefan Herheim; With Daniel Frank, Tobias Kehrer, Derek Welton, Elisabeth Teige, Annika Schlicht, Ricarda Merbeth a. o. 18, 24, 31 May 2024
Siegfried
Wagner described his SIEGFRIED as a "heroic comedy" which, in its balance between comic and tragic elements, remains the challenge for its directors to this day. For Herheim, it is the act of the play that joins the opposites into a whole. The boundaries between animal and human become as blurred as those between the characters and their creator... Conductor: Nicholas Carter [18 May] / Sir Donald Runnicles; Director: Stefan Herheim; With Clay Hilley, Ya-Chung Huang, Iain Paterson, Jordan Shanahan, Tobias Kehrer, Lindsay Ammann, Ricarda Merbeth / Elisabeth Teige et al. 20, 26 May; 2 June 2024
Götterdämmerung
In the final part of the tetralogy, the theatrical devices that dominate Stefan Herheim's version of the RING also come together for the grand finale: the concert grand piano, where the play once began, is just as present as the white cloth, which, among other things, mutates into the shroud of the murdered hero. And, of course, the suitcases are also present, which in the course of the tetralogy have repeatedly created new landscapes and play situations. In the end, this world sinks, only to be reborn in the next play ... Conductor: Nicholas Carter [20 May] / Sir Donald Runnicles; Director: Stefan Herheim; With Clay Hilley, Thomas Lehman, Jordan Shanahan, Albert Pesendorfer, Ricarda Merbeth, Felicia Moore, Annika Schlicht a. o.The 24/25 season is out now

Camilla Nylund as Tosca
"For me, the role of Floria Tosca is something very special. The music has a tremendous urgency and emotionality, no bar is too much, you really have to throw yourself into the role with everything you've got - and of course control your voice at the same time. What also fascinates me about Puccini is his empathy and his sense of the needs of the women of his time: Tosca is a person of flesh and blood, a fighter who never loses hope until the end despite the insidiousness and cruelty around her - an idealist and probably the only humanist in the entire opera," says Camilla about the role of Tosca, which she sings on 16 and 23 June. At her side will be Vittorio Grigolo and Erwin Schrott, among others. in INTERMEZZO - premiere on 25 April 2024
115 seconds with: Thomas Blondelle
It is always a pleasure to welcome the Belgian tenor Thomas Blondelle to our opera house. In the coming weeks, he will be appearing as Baron Lummer in Tobias Kratzer's new production of INTERMEZZO and as Loge in Richard Wagner's DAS RHEINGOLD. Listen and watch him in a not-so-small selection of roles in these 115 seconds. Richard Tucker Award Winner 2024
Our congratulations to Clay Hilley
His Berlin Siegfried brought him his breakthrough: with his portrayal of Wagner's hero in the new production at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in November 2021, US-American Clay Hilley instantly became one of the most sought-after heldentenors on the international opera scene. The New York-based Richard Tucker Music Foundation has now honoured this by awarding Hilley the prize named after its namesake, thereby admitting him to an exclusive club that includes some of the best singers in the world. Previous winners of the Richard Tucker Award include Joyce Di Donato, Renée Fleming and Deborah Voigt. And even though Hilley now performs at all the world's major opera houses, he is particularly loyal to the house where his career began: At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, he can not only be seen in the current performances of the RING, but will return here in the coming season as Tristan and Tannhäuser as well as Calaf in Puccini's TURANDOT. The Canterville Ghost
Canterville Castle has been haunted for generations, but that doesn't stop the American envoy Hiram B. Otis from buying the old walls. As an enlightened American, he does not believe these English tales. And so hard times begin for the old castle ghost. Martin Auer and Rüdiger Ruppert have created an impressive narrative concert with Christian Brückner and the Wild Jazz Orchestra. A work of sound art for the whole family!
