It is remarkable, but also significant, that the two greatest opera composers of the 19th century never personally met: although the works of Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner dominated the world's opera stages from 1850 onward, both composers notably evaded noting or even trying to directly contact one another. Their ideas of musical theatre, perfected over decades, were too different. On one side was Verdi's radical focus on elementary and human drives that trigger fateful events when they collide. On the other side was Wagner's devotion to myth and characters as the holders of ideas that are greater than the characters themselves. Yet this contrast also allows for a stimulating direct comparison: the Verdi-Wagner Gala by the Deutsche Oper Berlin will examine what separates – or even unites – these two composers.
