Giuseppe Verdi wrote more than half of his operas in the decade between 1840 and 1850. The comparison between two of his most well-known works from this period, which stands at the centre of the Verdi Gala, illustrates in a fascinating way the development of Verdi's dramatic musical characterisation, especially as the main roles in NABUCCO and MACBETH are written for entirely similar voices: if the two title roles are the first great examples of the Verdi baritone, then Abigaille in NABUCCO and Lady Macbeth, with their unconditional desire for power, represent demonic counterparts to the tender, helpless soprano women of Romantic opera.

These charismatic characters will be depicted by two exceptional singers at the gala concert: young Canadian baritone Etienne Dupuis celebrated a triumphant success in his title role in EUGEN ONEGIN or as Posa in DON CARLO at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, while Spanish soprano Saioa Hernández has interpreted Verdi's greatest dramatic roles around the world since her debut as Odabella in ATTILA at the 2018 Scala in Milan. They are accompanied by Irene Roberts, Marko Mimica, Patrick Cook, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin Orchestra conducted by Roberto Rizzi Brignoli.
