About the performance

The programme includes

Gustav Mahler [1860 - 1911]
Symphony No. 2 in C minor
for orchestra, solo voice and mixed choir
1. Allegro maestoso. Mit durchaus ernstem und feierlichem Ausdruck
2. Andante comodo. Sehr gemächlich. Nie eilen
3. In ruhig fließender Bewegung
4. Urlicht – Sehr feierlich aber schlicht. Nicht schleppen
5. Im Tempo des Scherzos. Wild herausfahrend – Wieder zurückhaltend – Langsam. Misterioso

Sir Donald Runnicles and the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin have been critically and publicly acclaimed for their Mahler interpretations: Now the 2nd Symphony is heard with orchestra, choir and soloists Karen Cargill and Heidi Stober.

As Sir Donald Runnicles tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday and is suffering from symptoms, he has to withdraw at short notice from conducting Mahler's "Resurrection Symphony" as part of the Musikfest Berlin on 7 September at the Philharmonie. We are grateful that Paolo Bortolameolli, who is currently on TOSCA conducting duties at the Opéra Bastille in Paris - alternating with Gustavo Dudamel - has agreed to take over the musical direction of the concert with the chorus and orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The Chilean-Italian artist is also associated with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Filarmónica de Santiago (Chile) and has just performed at the Gran Teatre del Licéu in Barcelona.
