With respect to our calendar for May, we have regretfully had to cancel the premiere of Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky’s THE QUEEN OF SPADES, scheduled for the 9th May – and will post up the new date of the premiere in due course. This has sadly been necessary, as the current regulations relating to gatherings make it clear that all of our departments would be prevented from preparing and rehearsing for the event. With the premiere postponed, all other performances of THE QUEEN OF SPADES scheduled for May have also been cancelled. As already announced in respect of performances up to 19th April, the price of any tickets purchased will be reimbursed. Depending on how the situation evolves, performances of other works will be scheduled to fill THE QUEEN OF SPADES dates. Details will be provided in good time.

Tchaikovsky's second most popular opera now, after EUGENE ONEGIN, is particularly exciting for its sheer size: the mood in QUEEN OF SPADES skilfully changes from great, represenative choral and ensemble opera that invokes the splendour of the tsardom, to folkloric moments, up to psychological chamber play scenes.
For Pyotr and Modest Tchaikovsky, Pushkin's short novella was the starting point for a psychological study of the two main characters Hermann and Lisa, who are bound in their fatalistic hopelessness and their failing aspiration for freedom.
The outsider Hermann is unluckily in love with the unavailable, more affluent Lisa. A mysterious card secret held by Lisa's aunt, the old countess, seems to offer the only way out of this situation. Yet when Hermann tries to pry the aunt's secret from her, she dies. However, she reveals the card combination to him in a dream. Reality and mania are now difficult for Hermann to differentiate. Instead of beginning a new life with Lisa, he hurries to the gambling tables …
Director Graham Vick is presenting at the Deutsche Oper Berlin for the fourth time now after TRISTAN AND ISOLDE and DEATH IN VENICE. German-Brazilian tenor Martin Muehle is returning to the Deutsche Oper Berlin in the role of Hermann after his success in ANDREA CHENIER.
