Is it the rustle of the void swallowing up the world at the Apocalypse that threatens to sweep everything before it in Rued Langgaard’s ANTICHRIST? Or is it the wings of the Angel of Vengeance – or Redemption? Or the growing modern-day stream of data made up of text and sounds and images? At any rate, the POWER OF NOISE is omnipresent in Rued Langgaard’s intriguing opera that was inspired by the Book of Revelations and is steeped in its expressionistic images.
gamut inc, the duo made up of Marion Wörle and Maciej Sledziecki, squares up to Langgaard’s opera, responding to his Late Romantic sound landscapes with music from their computer-controlled devices and arresting instrumentals from the brass section of the Deutsche Oper Berlin orchestra. In their “Church Ruin of Noise” they explore the big existential questions posed by Langgaard, questions relating to damnation and redemption, vanity, desire, hope and despair - and how they are relevant to society today.
This is the third AMBUSHED edition of the 2019/2020 season. It poses the question: why the title POWER OF THE ARTS? What kind of power are we talking about? What can it bring about? Who might be affected by it? This is the big theme being addressed by singer, composer and director Elia Rediger, who has been curating the series since the start of the 2019/2020 season. The successful AMBUSHED FROM BEHIND series continues its work offering an alternative response to five operas receiving their premieres on the main stage.
On these evenings special guests from the world of pop, rock, avant-garde, fashion and fine arts are invited to join up with members of the Deutsche Oper ensemble to create a their own programme and present their angle on the repertory works of great opera. Featured artists this season include Mary Ocher, Bonaparte, Rediger’s Brigade Futur 3, gamut inc and a witch.
