About the performance

To what extent do I as an artist influence my own biography? How do I free myself from attributions and labels? Do I adapt to my surroundings or do I consciously oppose them? With these questions, the transmedial artist Rosa Anschütz enters into resonance with Franz Schreker's opera DER SCHATZGRÄBER and gets up close and personal with the opera's female protagonist. Els is a seeker, a woman who determines the play of the opera, but ultimately has to fall short of the categories ascribed to her by men. She can say little about her own biography; like so many women in opera history, she has a fate she cannot escape: She is a contract killer and femme fatale - "Els is fatalistic, it is clear from the beginning that she will die" (Rosa Anschütz).

Rosa Anschütz' extensive artistic oeuvre includes sound, object and scenery, photography and film. In the process, her work repeatedly addresses the beauty of self-loss and the happiness of a self-determined life and creativity. In this edition of the AMBUSHED FROM BEHIND series, she will make the nuances of the opera character Els audible and attempt a rewriting of her biography. Based on her recently released album "Der goldene Strom", the audience will be immersed in a fluid performance. In addition to tracks from the new album, new installation works and artistic objects by Anschütz will be presented for the first time this evening. A rippling fountain is at the centre of this all-artistic opening of "Der goldene Strom": like the protagonist from Schreker's opera, we become seekers who let ourselves drift, only to strand again and again on islands.

"Golden Stream" is about the desire to surrender to the moment and the movement of life and at the same time to resist its currents - those currents that want to drive you somewhere you don't want to go. Anschütz confidently uses all the means of electronic music production and combines them with analogue instruments, with flute, trumpet and guitar; to this she sings, speaks and breathes with her cold and sure voice. She recorded the songs - as on the previous albums - with the Berlin producer Jan Wagner, who is also at her side on this evening.

Under the motto "Power of the Arts", AMBUSHED FROM BEHIND to SCHATZGRÄBER is the fifth evening of the 2021/2022 season within the series, with which, based on artistic positions of the present, the premieres are commented on the big stage. AMBUSHED FROM BEHIND is curated by the singer, composer and director Elia Rediger, who, together with members of the ensembles of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, has hosted artists such as Max Prosa, Sofia Portanet, Polypore, Mary Ocher, Bonaparte and the Brigade Futur 3.
