For the child prodigy Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Richard Strauss, who was a generation older, was a fatherly friend - the adult Korngold considered Strauss a competitor for the favour of the audience: he was one of the few who could also produce "modern operas that were safe at the box office". Both had in common their opposition to New Music, especially in the form of the Viennese School around Arnold Schoenberg. On the occasion of the revival of Korngold's DAS WUNDER DER HELIANE and the new production of Strauss' ARABELLA, the relationship between the two composers will be examined in a lecture by Professor Arne Stollberg, the director of the Institute for Music and Media Studies at the Humboldt University Berlin. The second part of the event will be devoted to the "Erich Wolfgang Korngold Werkausgabe", launched in 2021: A presentation and subsequent discussion will show what such a new edition of the scores is good for, what discoveries it holds in store and what it can do for musical practice.
